Teacher assigns literary classics (with exiting English translations) from ELL's countries and assigns them as group leaders in creating a report.. Cultural allusions are explored, and possible "Lost in Translation" elements are highlighted. ELL student does not have to present the report.
Class is assigned study weather patterns across different parts of the globe (including US, countries of ELLs, and some extreme ones - e.g., mars, to increase fun value). Melting asphalt underfoot, frozen 'hot' drinks, etc., can be part of the (hopefully experienced and shared) project.
Students are asked to research the origin of zero and evolution of math in ancient civilizations. Central American students can look into the Mayan placeholder, while Indians, Chinese, and Arab ELLs will have a lot of material!
