As a small island that doesn't have naturalaquifers and lakes and with little land to collectrainwater, Singapore needs to maximisewhatever it can harvest.

Currently, Singapore uses two separatesystems to collect rainwater and used water.Rainwater is collected through acomprehensive network of drains, canals, riversand stormwater collection ponds before it ischannelled to Singapore's 17 reservoirs forstorage. This makes Singapore one of the fewcountries in the world to harvest urbanstormwater on a large scale for its watersupply.

The newest reservoirs are Punggol andSerangoon Reservoirs which are our 16th and17th reservoirs. By 2011, the water catchmentarea has increased from half to two-thirds ofSingapore’s land surface with the completion ofthe Marina, Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs.

With all the major estuaries already dammed tocreate reservoirs, PUB aims to harness waterfrom the remaining streams and rivulets nearthe shoreline using technology that can treatwater of varying salinity. This will boostSingapore’s water catchment area to 90% by2060.
