Teaching Pronunciation Timeline

This is a Timeline of teaching Pronunciation. Because pronunciation training in Europe up to the late 19th century relied heavily on imitation and approximations derived from spelling, there was remarkably little published on the subject in comparison to structure or meaning teaching. This absence of recorded information could be due to a lack of technical understanding, which is very possible, but it could also be due to the fact that classical language study (the main focus of the literature) never encouraged learners to engage in communicative engagement. It is self-evident that pronunciation can only take center stage in language instruction if language is viewed as a system of oral communication in part. If language is viewed as a theoretical study or a method to facilitate further study of, say, literature, then pronunciation becomes an ungainly and tuneless second fiddle to the great instruments of structure, syntax, and vocabulary, as it is in the case of Grammar Translation.
