Modern day, athletes are mainly caught doping or using steroids.
In Ancient Greece, athletes were mainly caught bribing the judges or manipulating another opponents equipment.
In Ancient Greece, cheaters were publicly whipped.
Participants
Similarities:
The ages varied, but the majority of participants are on the younger side (20s-30s).
Differences:
In Ancient Greece, participants could only be men that were native Greeks and majority were nobles or nobles sponsoring peasant/farmer participants
Modern day, participants can have any background, come from anywhere, and can be any sex.
Winners Prize
Similarities:
Winners receive a prize and public recognition.
Winners are considered celebrities basically.
Differences:
In Ancient Greece, there was only one winner per event, but a lot less people participated in the Ancient Greek Olympics compared to Modern Day Olympics.
In Ancient Greece, winners received the olive branch wreath crown and sometimes a wife if they impressed certain nobles enough.
Modern day, third, second, and first place are rewarded with the bronze, silver, and gold medals.
Modern day, winners get worldwide recognition.
Training
Similarities:
Most athletes had/have trainers.
Most athletes are sponsored.
Athletes spend the majority of their time training.
Differences:
The caliber of training today is higher than in Ancient Greece.
Modern day, we can specialize more on what training a certain athlete needs while in Ancient Greece it was more staying in shape and doing everything individually because there weren't any team sports.
Beliefs/Motives
Similarities:
Both generation of athletes believed in winning for themselves and pushing themselves to the limit.
Athletes participate in hopes of recognition.
Differences:
Ancient Greeks held these games to appease their Gods and to win favor of their Gods.
Modern day, participants aren't competing for religious reasons usually.
