The fall of the Western Roman Empire (also called the fall of the Roman Empire or the fall of Rome) was the loss of central political control in the Western Roman Empire, a process in which the Empire failed to enforce its rule, and its vast territory was divided into several successor polities. The Roman Empire lost the strengths that had allowed it to exert effective control over its Western provinces; modern historians attribute this to factors such as the army's effectiveness and numbers, the Roman population's health and numbers, the economy's strength, the emperors' competence, internal power struggles, religious changes of the time, and the efficiency of the civil administration. The decline was undoubtedly aided by increasing pressure from invading barbarians outside of Roman society. Many of these immediate elements were influenced by climatic changes as well as endemic and pandemic diseases. The causes of the collapse are key topics in ancient world historiography, and they inform much of modern discourse on state failure. In 376, the Empire was flooded with unmanageable numbers of Goths and other non-Romans escaping the Huns. After winning two catastrophic civil wars, Theodosius I died in 395, leaving behind a declining field army and an Empire still plagued by Goths, divided between his two inept sons' feuding ministers. Other barbarian groups crossed the Rhine and other borders, but were not destroyed, banished, or subjugated like the Goths. The Western Empire's armed forces dwindled and became inefficient, and despite brief resurgences led by capable leaders, central power was never effectively established. By 476, the Western Roman Emperor had little military, political, or financial strength, and had no effective control over the scattered Western territories that could still be called Roman.
