Career Development Plan

Self-assessment

Legislative Branch Knowledge

Having five years employment in the WV Legislature, I have a working knowledge of the process, as well as working relationships with many full-time staff.

Judicial Branch Knowledge

While I have worked in the Judiciary for five years, I have only worked in a position were I interact with people from the whole court system for approximately 2 years. I need to gain a better understanding of the whole court system and how it works together, as well as become better acquainted with our judges and judicial staff.

Goals

Complete MPA

Graduate from Marshall University with an MPA in the Spring of 2024.

Court Services Deputy Director (2-5 years)

After earning an MPA and working as the Executive Assistant to the Administrative Director to the WV Supreme Court of Appeals, I will have obtained the knowledge to move to this position.

Deputy Administrative Director (5-10 years)

Working as the Deputy Director of Court Services will give me a more intimate knowledge of the court system and I better working relationship with judicial officers. I will be well equipped to become the Deputy Administrative Director of the WV Supreme Court of Appeals

Strategies & Action Plan

Take additional leadership courses.

Attend legislative meetings with current Deputy Administrative Director, learning the intricacies of coming to the legislature and presenting instead of being a legislative staffer.

As I currently work directly for the Administrative Director, ask for more responsibility that will help to steer toward the Court Services Deputy Director position.

Become more familiar with the Court budget and budget process

Resources

Attend annual judicial, magistrate, family court, and probation conferences to become more familiar with the workings of each area of the judiciary.

Follow Senate and House Judiciary Committee interim meetings - learn they're intent for the coming legislative sessions.
