This will aid students to make sure they do not have gaps in theiroriginal language and cognitive development. ESL students whoneglect their native language can suffer from issues of identityloss or alienation from their family and culture.

All students in the class develop pride in their origins and are encouraged tostduy and share them. They gain a greater understanding of world cultures andworld geography. Students from diverse backgrounds develop pride in theirheritage. When they see their native cultures and languages being studied in themainstream classroom, they feel validated.

Developing relationships with peers is great for ELL students whomay feel like an outsider in the classroom. Feeling supported byclassmates and becoming comfortable with their environment willhelp students control their anxiety and allow them to focus onlearning.
