This is a study notes mind map of Deep Work by Cal Newport. A mind map is a two-dimensional graphic diagram that allows you to arrange your notes. Mind maps, unlike linear notes, are frequently drawn on a blank piece of paper or canvas in landscape mode rather than portrait mode. Instead of starting at the top left and working your way down to the bottom right, you begin your mind map by putting the subject or headline in the middle of the page, then adding your notes as branches radiating outwards from the center.
While this new approach to taking notes may appear strange at first, it has a number of advantages, especially if you want to remember things:
At a glance, a mind map depicts links, hierarchies, and connections between distinct pieces of data.
Because they collect all of your notes relating to a topic on one single page, mind maps provide an excellent overview of a topic.
Mind maps encourage you to take fewer notes that are more significant. Instead of mechanically typing the information, your brain actively processes it as you make the map.
Images, iconography, colors, and a two-dimensional structure are used as mental triggers in mind maps to help you remember their contents.
You can always go back to your notes and add more information.
Using a mind map to take notes is enjoyable and seems more like doodling than serious work! To see more mind map templates, you can visit the EdrawMind community.

Deep work by Cal Newport
Cal Newport is a contributing writer for The New Yorker and an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University. His scholarship focusses on the theory of distributed systems, and his general-audience writing explores intersections of culture and technology. Newport is the author of seven books, including, most recently, “Deep Work,” “Digital Minimalism,” and “A World Without Email.” He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from M.I.T.
INTRODUCTION
Deep work- Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill and are hard to replicate.
Shallow work-Noncognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted, not big value, easty to replicate.
Deep work hypothesis- The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. Those who cultivate this skill and then make it to the core of their working life, will thrive.
PART1- THE IDEA
Deep work is valuable-Nate Silver, David Heinemeir Hansson, John Doerr
High skilled workers, Super stars, The Owners- How to beocome a winner in the new economy-The ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce at an elite level in quality and speed.
Deep work is rare- Open office concept, instant messaging, big business actively decreases people's ability for deep work
Deep work is meaningful- a neurological, philosophical and psychological arguement for depth.
PART 2- THE RULES
Work Deeply- Decide on your depth philosphy- monastic, bimodal, rythmic, journalist, Ritualise, make grand gestures, Be Lazy.
Embrace Boredom-Dont take break from distractions, take break from focus, Theodre Roosevelt, card memorisation; Ability to concentrate is only as strong as your commitment to train it.
Quit Social media- Baratunde Thurston, Any benefit approach, law of vital few, give mind something meaningful to work on
Drain the Shallows-Schedule every minute of your day, quantify the depth of every activity, become hard to reach...
CONCLUSION
Bill gates ability for deep work- a prodigeous feat of concentration; Winifred Gallagher '" I'll live the focussed life, because it is the best kind therein.; Notes references
