This is a Mind Map Of Metabolites. A metabolite is a metabolic intermediary or end product in biochemistry. Small molecules are commonly referred to as metabolites. Metabolites serve a variety of purposes, including fuel, structure, signaling, enzyme stimulation and inhibition, catalytic activity (typically as a cofactor), defense, and interactions with other organisms (e.g. pigments, odorants, and pheromones). A primary metabolite plays a direct role in "growth," "development," and reproduction. Ethylene is an example of a primary metabolite produced by industrial microbiology on a huge scale. A secondary metabolite isn't involved in those activities directly, but it usually serves a vital ecological purpose. Antibiotics and pigments such as resins and terpenes are examples. Some antibiotics, such as actinomycin, which is made from the primary metabolite tryptophan, use primary metabolites as precursors. Some sugars are metabolites, like fructose or glucose, which are both found in metabolic pathways. The metabolome is a complex web of metabolic reactions in which the products of one enzymatic chemical activity are used as inputs in other chemical reactions. Metabolites are formed as a result of the natural biochemical process of decomposing and removing chemical substances, whether natural or pharmaceutical. The rate at which a chemical degrades is a key factor in determining the duration and intensity of its activity. Understanding how pharmaceutical substances are metabolized, as well as the potential adverse effects of their metabolites, is crucial for medication development.
