This respiratory failure concept map nursing depicts the various causes of respiratory failure. Respiratory failure is a serious condition that makes breathing difficult on your own. Respiratory failure occurs when the lungs cannot deliver enough oxygen to the blood. We take in oxygen from the air and expel carbon dioxide, a waste gas produced by the body's cells. Breathing is necessary for life to exist. For our tissues and organs to function properly, oxygen must pass from our lungs into our blood. Carbon dioxide buildup can harm tissues and organs and prevent or slow bodily oxygen delivery. Acute respiratory failure occurs suddenly and without warning. A disease or an injury frequently causes it.
