The Ottoman Empire once spanned three continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa, ruling a vast area from Central Asia to North Africa to Southeast Europe. The Ottoman Empire was the predecessor of Turkey. It lasted for more than 600 years and produced a total of 36 sultans. The Ottoman secular supreme ruler was called the Sultan, similar to the Chinese emperor. The Ottoman Empire lasted more than six hundred years from its establishment to its demise. During such a long period, the country had always been in the hands of the Ottoman family and had never been usurped by anyone.
