Introduction to Vocaloid, Utau, P Master and Virtual Diva
1. Introduction to Vocaloid
picture
1.The origin of the name Vocaloid
The name VOCALOID is composed of "vocal" and the suffix "-oid". The suffix "-oid" means "similar to ~" and "~-like". When combined with "human (human)", it becomes "humanoid (humanoid machine with human characteristics)", which is the root of the Greek word for man. The combination of "andro-" (used before a vowel is "andr-") is "android (robot)", and VOCALOID means "imitation singing voice", "created thing that resembles human vocal music" and "can sing" s things".
However, there is another explanation for the origin of the name: "Vocal Android (singing robot) = VOCALOID (ボーカロイド)", which means "robot that can sing".
The above is the release time from Vocaloid1 to Vocaloidβ-Studio, as of October 5, 2023
3. Parameters
If you just input lyrics and melody to synthesize a singing voice, the sound will appear mechanical. The VOCALOID engine & editor provides users (often called "trainers" or "P masters") with many quantifiable parameters for the detailed synthesis of VOCALOID singing voices. Among the commonly used editors, VOCALOID4 has 12 parameters, VOCALOID5 has deleted 1 parameter and added 2 parameters, and VOCALOID:AI has only three parameters. details as follows:
*The English name of the parameter is preceded by the abbreviation and followed by the full name. If there are two sets of English names separated by slashes (such as opening, Opening/Mouth), the former is the parameter name of V4 and previous versions, and the latter is the parameter name of V5 and later versions. Some parameters with two sets of English names have the same full name, but the abbreviation has been changed in VOCALOID6 (such as portamento, PIT/PB)
Speed (VEL, Velocity)
Affects the length of consonants (initial consonants). The higher the value, the shorter the consonant duration and the more rapid the pronunciation.
Dynamics (DYN, Dynamics)
Affects volume. The higher the value, the louder the volume. You can also use this to achieve a crescendo or diminution effect. (AI sound library supports this parameter)
Breathiness (BRE, Breathiness)
The higher the value, the louder the breath sound will be. This parameter has been optimized in VOCALOID5, and the effect of breath sounds is more realistic.
Brightness (BRI, Brightness)
Affects mid- and high-frequency components. The higher the value, the stronger the brightness; the lower the value, the calmer, especially the gentle feeling. This parameter affects the volume. If the parameter value is too low, the sound may become muddy.
Clarity (CLE, Clearness / CLR, Clearness)
Used to add gain to the ultra-high frequency band. The higher the value, the stronger the sense of clarity; the lower the value, the deeper the feeling. Using too high may result in excessive sibilance.
Opening degree (OPE, Opening / MOU, Mouth)
Simulates mouth opening and closing. The default parameter is the maximum value. The lower the value, the smaller the singer's mouth opening and closing when singing.
Gender value (GEN, Gender Factor / CHA, Character)
Formants that affect sound. In VOCALOID 4 and below, the higher the value, the stronger the male voice; the lower the value, the voice sounds like a woman or even a child, and vice versa for VOCALOID 5 and above. If you increase or decrease the value a lot, the sound can be completely different from the original. The extremes in both directions are very scary, so use with caution.
Portamento Timing (POR, Portamento Timing)
This parameter determines the offset time of the pitch transition between two consecutive notes of different pitches (for example, from do to mi, the pitch does not change to mi instantly, but the pitch transition is delayed/early). Some tutorials believe that the POR parameter changes the pitch change speed (that is, the time required for the pitch change), which is actually incorrect. This can be concluded through the pitch line (Pitch Rendering) function of VOCALOID4. The parameter range is 0~127, the higher the value, the further the pitch change will be.
Portamento (PIT, Pitch Bend / PB, Pitch Bend)
This parameter controls the rise and fall of the pitch. The higher the value, the actual output pitch will be higher than the input (that is, the pitch of the note itself on the piano roll); vice versa, the lower it will be. Can be used as pitch adjustment. It has the same function as the "Pitch bend wheel" on the electronic keyboard. The parameter range is -8192~8191, and the pitch change corresponding to portamento is "from lowering to raising PBS semitones (PBS is the portamento range)". A parameter of 0 represents no portamento. (AI sound library supports this parameter)
Portamento Sensitivity (PBS, Pitch Bend Sensitivity)
This parameter controls the amplitude of the pitch change of the slide bar (PIT) at the same value, that is, the sensitivity. The parameter range is 1~24 (default is 2). The higher the value, the greater the change. Together with PIT, it determines the pitch change. (AI sound library supports this parameter) The specific calculation formula for pitch change is: PitchBend = (PIT * PBS) / 8192, and the unit is semi-tone.
Growl (GWL, Growl / GRW, Growl)
This parameter is a new parameter of the VOCALOID4 engine/editor. It is only valid for sound sources of VOCALOID4 and above. It can make the singer's voice roar. The parameter range is 0~127, and the default value is 0. The larger the value, the stronger the roaring effect. Use with caution, except for novices who want to turn your singer into a gulu carbon.
Cross-performance parameters (XSY, Cross-Synthesis)
This parameter is a new parameter for the VOCALOID4 engine/editor. It is only valid for fusion sound sources (that is, sound sources containing multiple voices) (including each company's own V4 sound source and some V3 sound sources). It is used to adjust the relationship between the main and secondary sound sources of the fusion sound source. . (This parameter has been removed in V5)
The parameter range is 0~127, and the default value is 0. The larger the value, the closer the sound is to the voice of the sub-singer. The change of the main and sub-singer can be modified in the singer settings.
Air sound (AIR, Air)
This parameter is only supported by VOCALOID5 and above. The default is 0. If it is full, it has the effect of adding _0 after the phoneme. This parameter can increase the proportion of breath in singing.
Excitation value (EXT, Exciter)
This parameter is only supported by VOCALOID5 and above. It can be used to adjust the excitation value of the singer's voice. Its function is similar to the Exciter effector in general mixing.

5.Vocaloid version introduction
VOCALOID1 generation
Yamaha began developing VOCALOID in March 2000 and unveiled it at the Frankfurt Musical Instruments Show in Germany from March 5 to 9, 2003.
The first VOCALOID Leon and Lola were released by Zero-G on March 3, 2004, and were sold under the name "Virtual Soul Singer". Leon and Lola were first exhibited at the NAMM Show on January 15, 2004. Both were demoed in Wired Magazine and won the 2005 Electronic Music Producers' Choice Award. Zero-G subsequently released MIRIAM in July 2004, with audio provided by Miriam Stockley.
At the end of 2004, Crypton Future Media also released its first VOCALOID product MEIKO. In June 2005, Yamaha upgraded the software engine to 1.1. Yamaha subsequently released a patch package that enabled all VOCALOID software to be upgraded to 1.1.2 and added some new features, although the new features added after different software upgrades are different.
A total of five VOCALOID sound libraries were released between 2004 and 2006. VOCALOID had no competitors in the early days of its release, and its English version only had to compete with VirSyn's Cantor, which was released later. However, despite the Japanese audio source, the software lacks a Japanese interface, that is, both the English version and the Japanese version of the software have English interfaces. The only difference between the versions is the LOGO and main interface color.
In 2011, version V1.1 was no longer supported by Yamaha and updates were discontinued.
Vocaloid1 generation introduction (English version)
Yamaha started development of VOCALOID in March 2000 and announced it for the first time at the German fair Musikmesse on March 5–9, 2003. The first VOCALOIDs, Leon and Lola, were released by the studio Zero-G on March 3, 2004, both of which were sold as a "Virtual Soul Vocalist". Leon and Lola made their first appearance at the NAMM Show on January 15, 2004. Leon and Lola were also demonstrated at the Zero-G Limited booth during Wired Nextfest and won the 2005 Electronic Musician Editor's Choice Award. Zero-G later released Miriam, with her voice provided by Miriam Stockley, in July 2004. Later that year, Crypton Future Media also released their first VOCALOID Meiko. In June 2005, Yamaha upgraded the engine version to 1.1 . A patch was later released to update all VOCALOID engines to VOCALOID 1.1.2, adding new features to the software, although there were differences between the output results of the engine. A total of five VOCALOID products were released from 2004 to 2006. VOCALOID had no previous rival technology to contend with at the time of its release, with the English version only having to face the later release of VirSyn's Cantor software during its original run. Despite having Japanese phonetics, the interface lacked a Japanese version and both Japanese and English vocals had an English interface. The only differences between versions were the color and logo that changed per template. As of 2011, this version of the software is no longer supported by Yamaha and will no longer be updated.
VOCALOID2 generation
VOCALOID 2 was released in 2007. Due to time factors, VOCALOID 2 is not publicly tested as a beta version like previous versions. Software upgrades are determined by problems reported by users.
This version of the compositing engine and UI are a huge innovation, and the Japanese version of the software has a dedicated UI.
VOCALOID 2 implements many new features, such as note auditioning, transparent control track, toggling between playback and rendering and expression control. Moreover, human breathing and hoarse voices can be recorded into the sound source library to create more realistic sounds.
VOCALOID 2 is not compatible with previous versions, and the sound source libraries of previous versions cannot be used in this version. In addition to the PC software, the NetVOCALOID service has also been made public.
The software has not been localized, and each language version of the software can only have sound sources in their respective languages. Therefore, although Xunyin Ruka has English sound sources, the Japanese version of VOCALOID can only load its Japanese sound sources. VOCALOID has a total of 17 Japanese sound source packs and 5 English sound source packs, with a total of 35 sound sources.
Yamaha demonstrated VOCALOID 2 for iPhone and iPad at the Y2 2010 Fall Digital Content Expo. Subsequently, iPhone and iPad versions of the software were released, using Yamaha's own VY1 sound source.
English version
VOCALOID 2 was announced in 2007. Due to time constraints, unlike the previous engine version, it did not have a public beta test and instead the software was updated as users reported issues with it. The synthesis engine and the user interface were completely revamped, with Japanese VOCALOIDs possessing a Japanese interface. New features such as note auditioning, transparent control track, toggling between playback and rendering, and expression control were implemented. One's breath noise and husky voice can be recorded into the library to make realistic sounds. This version is not backward compatible and its editor cannot load a library built for the previous version. Aside from the PC software, NetVOCALOID services are offered. Despite this, the software was not localized and VOCALOIDs of either English or Japanese would only possess that language version, so although Megurine Luka had an English library included, as a Japanese VOCALOID she only had access to the Japanese version of the software. In total, there were 17 packages produced for VOCALOID 2 in the Japanese version of the software and five in the English version ; these packages offered 35 voicebanks between them in either English or Japanese. Yamaha announced a version of the VOCALOID 2 software for the iPhone and iPad, which exhibited at the Y2 Autumn 2010 Digital Content Expo in Japan. Later, this version of the software was released using the voice of Yamaha's own VOCALOID called VY1.
VOCALOID 3rd generation
VOCALOID 3 was launched on October 21, 2011, along with several Japanese voice sources and the first Korean voice source. Yamaha provides some ways to upgrade V2 audio sources to V3.
V3 also includes a system called Vocalistener (ぼかりす), which can automatically measure and adjust the speech synthesis parameters of the user's singing voice to synthesize a more natural singing voice.
V3 supports more languages, including Chinese, Korean and Spanish. V3 also supports using its own plug-in to switch between standard and "classic" modes, the latter of which produces less realistic singing than the former. Unlike previous products, V3's software and audio sources are sold separately.
The VOCALOID editor distributed with the VOCALOID 3 sound library software is only the "Tiny" version. Yamaha also licenses plug-ins, allowing V3 to be used on more platforms, such as video games. In addition, the VOCALOID 3 engine supports triphone technology, which improves language adaptability compared to VOCALOID 2.
V3's new technology has also been used to reproduce the singing voices of singers such as Ueki who passed away in 2007. This is the first time that this type of technology has been used to reproduce the lost voices. When the software was launched in 2004, it was already used by some people. Considered as a possibility to reproduce the sound, but until 2011 it was only for private use.
English version
VOCALOID 3 launched on October 21, 2011, along with several products in Japanese and a Korean product, the first of its kind. Several studios are providing updates to allow VOCALOID 2 vocal libraries to come over to VOCALOID 3. It will also include the software "Vocalistener", which adjusts parameters iteratively from a user's singing to create natural synthesized singing. It will support additional languages including Chinese, Korean, and Spanish. It is also able to use plug-ins for the software itself and switch between normal and " classic" mode for less realistic vocal results. Unlike previous versions, the vocal libraries and main editing software are sold as two separate items. The vocal libraries themselves only contain a "tiny" version of the VOCALOID 3 editing software. Yamaha will also be granting the licensing of plug-ins and use of the VOCALOID software for additional media such as video games. Also, VOCALOID 3 has Triphone support unlike VOCALOID 2 which improves language capabilities.
New technology is also being used to bring back the voice of the singer Hitoshi Ueki who died in 2007. This is the first attempt to bring back a singer whose voice had been lost, yet it had been considered a possibility since the software was first released in 2004. However, this is only being done for private use.
VOCALOID4, 5, 6, beta generation
Vocaloid4
In December 2014, VOCALOID 4 was officially released. Compared with V3, V4 has many new functions, such as pitch line, absolute pitch mode (Pitch Snap Mode), and two new parameters, GWL and XSY, which further improve the performance of the editor. . In addition, users can also submit their works to VOCALOID.NET.
In addition to the independently running VOCALOID 4 editor, an editor "VOCALOID Editor for Cubase" running under Cubase has also been released, which enables real-time input of notes through keyboard devices. After the release of the first version of V4, Yamaha has also made several updates, introducing more practical functions, such as quick switching of previously used parameters, quick switching of foreground and background parameters, quick running of JOB plug-ins, batch erasing of lyrics, etc. And improve the stability of program operation.
Vocaloid5
On July 12, 2018, VOCALOID5 went on sale. Compared with previous versions, V5 has more than 1,000 phrases and more than 1,000 audio samples, more than 100 singing style presets, and 11 sound effects. The editor supports VST, and supports V3 and V4 old sound libraries. At the same time, the project file format has changed from VSQX (V3/V4) to VPR (V5). The editor still supports reading VSQX, but it no longer supports the earlier VSQ format. This version has also been adjusted from the original 12 parameters to 13 parameters.
Added support for the Attack&Release effect, added adjustment function for the single note waveform itself, support for real-time pitch rendering, support for instant input by MIDI instruments, and a maximum of 32 audio tracks at the same time. Removed support for Job Plugin task plug-in and Cross Synthesis (XSY).
Four new voice actors have been added to the voice library, including VY1 Japanese female voice and VY2 Japanese male voice, CYBER SONGMAN II English male voice, and CYBER DIVA II English female voice. Amy (far left): English female voice with modern singing style, excellent technique, natural pronunciation and versatile vocals. Suitable for everything from Tone, R&B to pop music. Chris (second from left): An English male R&B voice with a wide vocal range, gentle yet powerful low frequencies, and also possesses malleable high frequencies. Kaori (second from right): Japanese female voice, long-sustained voice, and explosive singing style. Ken (far right): Bright, clear Japanese male voice, suitable for singing J-POP.

Vocaloid6
On September 3, 2019, Yamaha announced that with the help of NHK and many collaborators, it used deep learning to synthesize Misora's singing voice using Hibari Misora's voice material, and produced 3D images to reproduce Misora's performance. The VOCALOID:AI technology based on deep learning was announced that day.
In March 2021, Yamaha Co., Ltd. registered the trademark "VOCALOID: AI" in mainland China. The official version of VOCALOID 6 will be released on October 13, 2022. It is equipped with an AI synthesis engine, supports cross-language, and optimizes the rendering strategy, bringing Yamaha’s latest VOCALO Changer (similar to an AI voice changer) function.
Vocaloidβ
On August 22, 2023, VOCALOID β-STUDIO was released. This project is an experimental activity that aims to break and expand the stereotypes of "singing voice synthesis" and create new conventions in music production. VOCALOID β-STUDIO can currently only be used in DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You can adjust the singer's voice quality and strength through the knob, and supports reading in vpr (V5, V6), ccs, svp, ust, and MusicXML formats.
Similar: PiaPro Studio editor
In 2013, in order to provide users of our VOCALOID sound library products with a complete VOCALOID music production environment (DAW sound editor sound library), Crypton Future Media was authorized by Yamaha to use the VOCALOID API and developed it under the name of Piapro (a creative platform under Crypton Future Media) It also launched the VSTi version of the VOCALOID3 editor "Piapro Studio", which is bundled with sound library software such as Hatsune Miku V3 and KAITO V3. The software supports both Windows and macOS.
The software has a user interface and functions similar to the VOCALOID editor. It can be launched as a VST plug-in in DAW to import and edit VOCALOID singing sequence files (VSQ/VSQX) and MIDI files.
Starting from December 2013, Crypton has provided Piapro Studio with support for using sound library software launched by other companies in a software update, and the cost performance of Piapro Studio has been improved. When Crypton released its VOCALOID 4 sound source series (i.e., Patrol Sound V4X, Kagamine Rin·Lian V4X, Hatsune Miku V4X), the editor upgraded to a version that supports VOCALOID 4 (Piapro Studio V2.x), and natively (directly Conveniently) supports Crypton's E.V.E.C technology applied in the V4X sound library, which can finely adjust the "expression" of the singing voice.
Hatsune Miku V4 Chinese version (V4C) software comes with the newly released Piapro Studio Standalone editor (ie Piapro Studio independent version). As an independent software, it can replace the VOCALOID4 editor for VOCALOID singing editing (only supports Hatsune Miku V4C voice library ). In 2022, under the premise that the YAMAHA VOCALOID4 editor has long been discontinued, Piapro Studio has become the most cost-effective VOCALOID3/4 singing editor. Purchase the cheapest Hatsune Miku V4 Chinese version software (less than 700 yuan), which is bundled with the VSTi version of Piapro Studio editor, which can edit various sound libraries
(VOCALOID5 editor is priced at 27,500 yen, about 1,300 yuan)
Crypton has not obtained permission to use the VOCALOID5 API, so Piapro Studio has no plans to be compatible with the V5 sound library. Piapro Studio NT is not compatible with the VOCALOID sound library, so it is not mentioned here.
6.Vocaloid family
The VOCALOID family (commonly known as the "V family" on the Chinese Internet) is the general name for all singing voice synthesis software based on VOCALOID technology and the anthropomorphic characters derived from it. Including but not limited to: MEIKO, KAITO, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin, Kamigune Ruka, Kamui Ruppo, GUMI, IA, Luo Tianyi, Stardust, etc.

1. Basic information about Utau
UTAU, officially known as Singing Voice Synthesis Tool UTAU (Singing Voice Synthesis UTAU), is a voice synthesis software developed and produced by Ayaya/Acorus.
2.What is Utau
UTAU (the name comes from the Romaji for "歌う" in Japanese), officially known as the singing voice synthesis tool UTAU (singing voice synthesis ツールUTAU), is a "human VOCALOID" support software developed and produced by the Eiya/Acorus family.
The software can be downloaded for free, and you can record it yourself (you can also create sound files in other ways) to create a sound database for use. After making it, you can also upload it and share it with others.
UTAU is often mistaken for VOCALOID or VOCALOID subspecies. But in fact, except for the fake VOCALOIDs such as Yuto and others, which are part of a deceptive plan, almost all other UTAUs have nothing to do with VOCALOIDs. The accented Teto also broke away from the image of "Hush Diva" and became a member of UTAU after having his own music source.
(In fact, Teto seems to be the first sound source specially recorded for use on UTAU. The sound source Liyin Com that contributed to the birth of UTAU was not recorded for this software. The default sound source Uta (Defo sub) is the software Sound extracted from AquesTalk).
There are Chinese versions of software and tutorials available online. As long as there is love, everyone can have their own UTAU.
3. Differences and connections with human VOCALOID
UTAU is a tool created to support human VOCALOID and help beginners create human VOCALOID. The "human VOCALOID" creation tool is not limited to UTAU. The author has also provided source code for part of UTAU's production software, which allows everyone to modify and distribute it themselves.
4. Features of Utau compared to Vocaloid
The biggest feature of UTAU (aside from being free of charge) is simply that "as long as the sound file format is correct, you can use this sound file to synthesize a singing voice."
a. Almost no restrictions
Therefore, for UTAU, it can be said that there are almost no restrictions.
Since there are no restrictions on sound file formats, UTAU can theoretically sing in any language. UTAU can sing in the corresponding language as long as someone develops the corresponding available recording list.
There are corresponding recording lists for commonly used languages such as Chinese (including Cantonese), English, and Korean. (These are not the only languages available)
b. No commercial pressure
Since there is no commercial pressure, UTAU sound sources can be tried in various ways during production without worrying about problems such as "not being able to sell" or "not being able to recover the money".
c. Personality
At the same time, "personality" is also perfectly reflected on UTAU. Yufu, the snow song known for her whispering voice, is a good example. In addition, there are also various unconventional sounds made into sound sources.
For example, after a lot of post-processing of the human voice, the lead tone Pine sounds like an alien; the sound wave tone that directly uses FM sound source; the destruction sound Maiko that uses DEATH VOICE; the んにゃん that uses real cat meows, etc. .
3. Introduction of Master P
1 Introduction
VOCALOID craftsmen refer to musicians who mainly use VOCALOID software to produce songs and contribute to the website. They are a type of virtual singer-musician. As long as a VOCALOID user who is mainly active or highly active in the VOCALOID circle and recognizes this title can be called a "VOCALOID professional".
Many VOCALOID professionals not only use VOCALOID, a singing voice synthesis software, but also use UTAU, Synthesizer V, CeVIO, etc. Therefore, in the eyes of some people, as long as the author uses various singing voice synthesis software to produce and publish synthesized singing voices, he can be called a VOCALOID P master.
The reason why it is called "VOCALOID Craftsman" is simply because VOCALOID is the earliest and most influential of these engines. In addition, Master P's creation is not simply limited to the field of songs. For example, using singing voice synthesis software to teach cross talk and other folk arts or intonation teaching works can also be regarded as a broad P master.
2. Title
Some VOCALOID staff will have names ending in "P" (short for Producer, i.e. producer) online and are called P owners. It is generally believed that this title originally referred to "producer" and came from the idol master fans of the video website Niconico Animation, and was borrowed by VOCALOID users.
Many craftsmen in Japan are accustomed to being called so-and-so P, but there are some exceptions, such as Neru, ryo, kz (livetune), Mitchie M and other authors. In China, the folk have retained the title of "P Lord", but except for some P owners, such as Dot P, Flower Sacrifice P, etc., most P owners are not used to calling so-and-so P, but by their original stage names. There are also cases where "P" is used as the suffix, but the meaning has changed, such as COP.
3. Active platform
Video platform
niconico: It is the most important traditional activity platform for Japanese P-lists. It is also the platform where the singing synthesis culture represented by VOCALOID was first born. Although it has declined in recent years, singing synthesis is still an important part of Nico's characteristic culture.
bilibili: Generally, it is the most important activity platform for P hosts in mainland China, but in recent years, some Japanese and Taiwan P hosts have also released their works here.
YouTube: Generally, it is the activity of P hosts in Europe, America, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Japanese P hosts will generally contribute here; but with the gradual decline of Niconico, Japanese P hosts are paying more and more attention to YouTube, and even celebrities like Nayutan have appeared. This completely gave up Niconico's P master. (ナユタン星人 has returned to Niconico on April 16, 2022 and submitted unsubmitted tracks)
audio platform

QQ Music

Social platforms
In addition to uploading audio videos and audio, P owners will also use social platforms to express their emotions and interact with fans. Common ones include Twitter, YouTube updates, bilibili updates, Sina Weibo, etc. Of course, there are also more private platforms such as QQ groups. It allows publishers to have more intimate and in-depth communication with fans.
4. Activity methods
In addition to publishing vocal synthesis works, VOCALOID craftsmen may also wear multiple hats.
For example, they are also creators in other fields including but not limited to vocal singing, ghosts, MAD, game live broadcasts, etc. Of course, there are also examples of creators in other fields becoming VOCALOID P.
There are also some VOCALOID craftsmen who, after becoming famous by producing synthesized songs, will choose to develop into the field of anison, video game soundtracks and even real three-dimensional music. However, there are also a few three-dimensional traditional musicians like Chili Chill who have become VOCALOID craftsmen.

2. Introduction
Virtual singers are a type of virtual idol, but their unique feature is that their singing voices are synthesized by computer software. Therefore, virtual singers have greater freedom and convenience in fan creation than traditional idols and other virtual idols. Even for virtual singers who operate in idol mode, their songs are basically not officially produced but created by fans.
The virtual singer's voice usually needs to be recorded by a real person. Except for artificial intelligence singers, the production of songs requires creators to spend time training.
3. Origin of the name
Virtual singers are often called virtual idols. This is not wrong, but it should be noted that the two concepts are not equivalent. On the contrary, it is wrong to call virtual idols virtual singers.
Female virtual singers are often called virtual divas. Correspondingly, male virtual singers are sometimes called virtual singers, but this is less common.
In addition, with the rise of virtual UP masters, "virtual singer" may also refer to the singing virtual UP masters in some situations.
Some uncommon or incorrect names
VOCAL Character
The virtual singer weekly on the video website Niconico, in order to make the abbreviation the same as "VOCALOID", calls virtual singers who meet its inclusion conditions VOCAL Character.
Singing synthesis software role
Meaning the roles associated with singing voice synthesis software.

And as long as there is love, editors, operation interfaces, and other parts other than the singer's voice library can also be drawn and personified.
Electronic singer/electronic music singer
Usually refers to a singer who adds electronic sound effects to the sound through equipment such as a voice changer or post-processing, and sometimes refers to a virtual singer.
software singer

V/PAN VOCALOID
The letter "V" is the first letter of "vocal" and "virtual", two English words closely related to virtual singers. Therefore, some people will use "V" as a name for some virtual singers (sometimes specifically referring to the version using VOCALOID technology). But the image of Virtual also has vup
Since VOCALOID is the representative of the virtual singer brand, it is common to refer to other companies' products and even virtual singers in a broad sense as "VOCALOID".
"VOCALOID" is a registered trademark of YAMAHA Corporation and not a general name. In principle, only products based on VOCALOID technology can use the name "VOCALOID".
AI singer
Generally refers to virtual singers using artificial intelligence technology.
There are also cases where virtual characters have both cute attributes, namely an AI girl and a singer.
Virtual Diva from Crypton Future Media
Introduction
"Hatsune Miku", "Kagamine Rin", "Kagamine Ren", "Kagamine Ruka", "KAITO", and "MEIKO" are the characters of six electronic singer software, developed by Crypton Future Media.
Each character's singing voice recorded in the electronic singer software is different and full of his (or her) own characteristics. As long as the lyrics and melody are input on the computer screen, the singing voice (vocal part) can be formed.
After the software was launched, users of the software independently uploaded a large number of music and film and television works, centered on video sharing websites. These uploaded works have inspired other creators, thus forming a "creative chain reaction = Peer Production (Piapro)" that continuously generates new works.
These characters have as many styles as the creators have created. With the help of 3D imaging technology, we have held various concerts not only in Japan but also overseas. These characters have gradually demonstrated their global popularity and influence.

4. Role setting
Since the success of Hatsune Miku, singing voice synthesis software has often designed avatars to intuitively display features. The specific level of detail mainly depends on the manager's operating philosophy, but it does not necessarily appear on the interface of the singing voice synthesis software.
Most of the virtual singers are set as Japanese anime-style beautiful girls, and a few are men, animals, etc. The settings in terms of personality/measurements/experience are usually not very clear. There are also some virtual singers whose official images have not been given and are represented by relatively abstract patterns.
Virtual singers whose secondary creations are relatively loose can often show a high degree of diversity. Some are similar to wild-card characters, and they can try different background stories and different music styles. The virtual singer image in each author's works is different. There are also some songs where the virtual singer who sings the song does not appear in the PV.
5. The background of the virtual diva
technical background
The technical core of the virtual singer is the singing voice synthesis software, which consists of two parts: the sound library and the editor.
Due to limitations in technology and the user's own operating level, many special singing methods and emotional expressions of human singers are often difficult to restore. And it is inevitable to produce electronic sounds.
Many people believe that future singing voice synthesis software should further eliminate electronic sounds and restore human voices. But there are also quite a few people who think that the virtual singer's mechanical sense of maintaining the voice has a unique charm. In works with certain themes, voices with electronic sound characteristics are more in line with the theme.
In addition, there are also various unconventional sounds made into sound sources. Different people have different standards. Preferring a particular style is not a reason to disparage the technology that pursues realism.
editor
Simply entering lyrics and melody to create a song will make the sound jerky, so authors need to use an editor (English: editor) to achieve more precise control over their works by adjusting parameters.
Due to differences in technical principles, the effects of parameters with the same name in different software are slightly different.
You can also create some special effects by adjusting parameters (common ones include modifying gender parameters to create sex-changing effects, etc.).
The engine (English: engine) is the core component of singing synthesis software. In most cases, the synthesis engine and editor are bundled together, and users often only need to operate the editor. There are also some singing voice synthesis software whose back-end engines and front-end editors are separated and replaceable (such as UTAU).
sound library
The voice bank (English: voice bank) is considered the ontology of the virtual singer.
Sound libraries are often not bundled with editors, and users can choose to install and uninstall them according to their own needs. Some singing voice synthesis software will come with a sound library by default in the editor's installation package to facilitate users to try it out.
Due to differences in technical principles, sound libraries produced for one editor generally cannot be used on other editors, but newer versions of editors of the same brand are often backward compatible with older versions of sound libraries.
The same virtual singer character may have multiple sound libraries suitable for different software, or sound library versions in different languages for users to choose.
Operating environment
The use of virtual singer requires the support of software and hardware environment conditions. Generally, it can be installed on ordinary home computers with mainstream configurations.
There are also some virtual singers that are specially installed in smartphones (such as ACE Studio) or even dedicated hardware (such as VOCALOID KEYBOARD developed by YAMAHA).
There is also an online version (web version) of the singing synthesizer, which does not need to be installed locally. It can work directly in the browser and complete most functions online.
method of obtaining
There are two ways to obtain virtual singers: free and paid. Paid virtual singers also suffer from piracy.
Paid virtual singers generally sell the right to use them in a boxed form. There are also some virtual singers who sell through digital channels without using any physical media. There are also cases where activation codes or discs are bundled with business magazines and books. In addition, some virtual singers charge on a subscription basis.
The packaging box of a virtual singer usually has the main visual image printed on the front, and the necessary information including but not limited to the installation manual/usage regulations/CD/activation code is placed inside, and sometimes it also comes with bonuses.
The physical packaging boxes of virtual singers often have a certain peripheral nature or are simply hard peripherals that are voluntarily purchased. Sometimes even listeners who do not use it to create music will buy the physical packaging boxes of their favorite virtual singers for collection and souvenir.
6.Platform
region and language
Due to the strong correlation between virtual singer culture and ACG culture, most of the activities of virtual singers are on the Internet platforms in East Asia, and most of the relevant practitioners come from here. In addition, there are also some virtual singers and related practitioners from the United States, Europe and other regions.
Most virtual singers speak Japanese, Chinese, English, Korean, etc., and a few speak other languages. In most cases, the voice library of virtual singers is specifically set for a certain language, but there are also some P owners who are good at "cross-language training" skills who can use the sound library data of a certain language to create works in other languages.
With the development of artificial intelligence technology, the language limitations of virtual singers are gradually being broken.
Work publishing (submission) platform
Bilibili, Niconico, Youtube and other video websites (to be added)
Some operators with relevant capabilities and conditions will open special websites to receive submissions (such as piapro, a creative sharing network platform operated by Crypton Future Media).
Activity
The form of virtual singer activities is very free and diverse. Works can be launched across multiple media, multiple platforms, and in multiple carrier forms, and activities can be carried out in the virtual or real world.
Many virtual singers operate in a form similar to virtual idols, linking with various IP works, or serving as virtual spokespersons.
Each operator will explore and adopt activities that suit its specific circumstances. Virtual singers with special identities may also have special activity forms.
Activity history
Debut preparation period
It usually starts with the complete or incomplete setting text of the earliest official account, or the original avatar draft, or the organization releases voice provider recruitment information. The length of the process is variable until the official debut.
Some operators will use crowdfunding to obtain the fees needed to create a virtual singer's voice library.
There may be a small number of activities during this period, but the classification of the activities is vague and may or may not be included as virtual singer activities based on the actual situation.
Debut
It can be done by releasing a preview song, and initially showing its image, sound, performance and other strengths.
new version update
Virtual Singer can perform version updates to optimize performance and improve stability.
When the version is updated, the operator will usually replace or modify the image at the same time.
The sound provider may change when the version is updated.
After a new version is released, the old version may be discontinued.
