MindMap Gallery Brezhnev's History of Stability and Stagnation
The Brezhnev era was a unique phase in Soviet history, characterized by both political stability and economic stagnation. Politically, Brezhnev maintained a relatively stable political system, avoiding large-scale political turmoil. However, economically, Soviet growth significantly slowed, plunging into a prolonged stagnation. To uphold its status as a superpower, Brezhnev engaged in intense arms races with the United States, leading to a surge in military expenditures and further exacerbating the economic burden. Although Brezhnev attempted some social reforms to improve livelihoods and raise people's living standards, these reforms were relatively limited and failed to fundamentally address the issue of Soviet economic stagnation.
