Grade 2: Graceful Reactions After Losing a Game

In our Grade 2 initiative, we focus on teaching students graceful reactions after losing a game. The program unfolds in five key phases. Phase 1 prepares students with a morning meeting to introduce the goal of staying calm and kind. Simple phrases and calming strategies are practiced just before recess. In Phase 2, during the game, students are reminded of expectations and given roles to support positive interactions. Phase 3 focuses on core routines immediately after a loss, encouraging sportsmanship through specific steps and coping strategies. Phase 4 emphasizes reflection and skill-building, helping students process their emotions and replace unhelpful reactions with respectful ones. Finally, Phase 5 promotes ongoing practice over four weeks, establishing routines, building independence, handling difficult moments, and celebrating graceful reactions in the community.
