Elementary Mathematics Teaching Plan

What we have here is a mind map displaying the first six weeks' teaching plan for elementary mathematics. In the first two weeks, students may be introduced to the Ten frames, Ploya's Problem, solving and early number sense, and Base ten and others. Notice that there is no class on Labor Day in week three. In the fourth and fifth weeks, students will learn alternative algorithms addition scratch and lattice, and subtraction, and be introduced the multiplication. Elementary Mathematics

Week One

Introduction to the class.

Went over syllabus, listens to Jessie's story and watched a juggling show. Also, went Ploya's solving strategies.

Introduction to Ten frame, Ploya's Problem Solving and Early Number Sense.

Went over Cardinality, One to one Correspondence, Counting, More and Less, Subitizing. Found out the difference between a Unit, Long, and Flat. A unit is a single dot. A long is a single line. While a flat is a square. It's easy to differentiate if the frames are draw that way.

Week Two

Introduction to Base ten and others

Played Biz/Buzz. learned the different types of ten frame and five frame. Went into different bases. Learned that each base is the tenth place

Build and Show Addition

Used the ten base blocks to understand how to addition. Learned that drawing a square means it's a flat drawing a single line is a long and drawing a dot is a unit.

Week Three

Labor Day-No Class

Alternative Algorithms Addition

Converted bases then we went over what makes a tradition algorithm good. When converting to base ten show the longs and units as is. With Converting to the given base use the number as a pile of units that you are putting together to make however many flats and long and counting up the units.

Week Six

Alternative Algorithms Multiplications

Went over why Automaticity is important and how schools are now withdrawing adding 11 and 12 to the multiplication chart. The use of timed Tests are bad for students because they cause anxiety and stress. Learned how to use Expanded Form, Left to right, Area Model, and lattice. Factors that make the multiplications are very important for students to know.

Week Five

Continued with Subtraction and Introduction Multiplication

Went over Expanded form and Equal Addends. Equal Addends- is when add the same number to make one or more of the problem easier to subtract.Expanded form-is writing out what each number of the problem actually is.

Build-Show Multiplication

Went over why being detailed and precise is important in math. For example: 3*5 is not 5 groups of three units. It is 3 groups of five units. Showed and build Multiplications. built is on an edge of a paper or flat area and pull the blocks away to show multiplications. Went over the meaning of an Array which is an arrangement of columns and rows.

Week Four

Alternative Algorithms Addition Scratch and Lattice

Scratch method- count up until ten and then scratch the old digit and writing the old one in Lattice -is using a box to help out adding without carrying over by using a box and a diagonal line for the longs and units' places.Trade off- is taking or giving numbers to help make the problem a easier to add together. Friendly numbers- is counting up or down to the next easiest number in order to add.Left to right- is counting from the flats longs and then units.Expanded form- is writing out what each number of the problem actually is.

Build-Show, Solve Subtractions

Used the ten base blocks to show subtractions and showed it. Also we went over expanded form.
