In lattice, addition and multiplication, you always need to add or multiply in terms of place value of the numbers going up and down. This way you can write your answer from left to right.

Arrays: Using Base 10 blocks to create a pictoral representation of a math problem. Example: 5(12) You would have 5 columns of 12 units (12 rows). Groups: Example: 4(3) - 4 groups of 3. Table with managers example covered in class: You would draw 4 tables with 3 people in each table.



















When you have an addition problem that is set up horizontally, such as 425 + 253, you take each digit from each of the separate numbers and write them from top to bottom then add them. Example: 400 + 20 + 5 200 + 50 + 3 = 600 + 70 + 8 = 678

Example: 132 + 451 100 + 30 + 2 : 132 400 + 50 + 1 ; + 451 = 583 You spread each number out and add those digits together. Then, you add both numbers to get the answer.







Reinforces Base 10 in which you can always refer back to it. A good algorithm is repeatable and students grow in their math skills as math concepts/problems get harder. It is short and efficient and you can always get it right.

Counting - Students instantly know what number comes after the next. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) Correspondence - Students know what number goes with one count. Subitizing - Students look at a number and know the amount of objects that are there. Cardinality - There is no recounting involved. Students know what the last number is based on the amount of what is in the set.
