Then her mother refuses to see her, leaving Mary to the care of Indian servants, who do not care for her. The servants, however must obey her. Then Mary's play-gardening gives her pleasure.
Mary Lennox was described as difficult and selfish. Her mother was diasappointed by her ugliness and sickliness.

The character Mary Lennox belives that she hates all people, so she only thinks of herself. She spends much time sitting by herself.
Frances Hodgson Burnett was a British-American novelist and playwright. Born November 24th, 1849. Died October 29th, 1924.
She was a German born Jewish girl who wrote while in hiding family and 4 friends in Amsterdam during German occupation of Netherlands in WW2.
Her family moved to Amsterdam after the Nazis gained power in Germany but were trapped when the Nazi occupation extended into the Netherlands.
As persecutions against the Jweish populations increased, the family went into hiding in July 1942 in hidden rooms in her father Otto Franks office building. After 2 years hiding, the group was transported to the concentration camp system where Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen.
