They obtained agreements from the sharecroppers to pay them compensation for being released from the 15 per cent arrangement.The sharecropping arrangement was irksome to the peasants, and many signed willingly. Those who resisted, engaged lawyers; the landlords hired thugs. Meanwhile, the information about synthetic indigo reached the illiterate peasants who had signed, and they wanted their money back.

First Gandhiji visited the secretary of the British landlord’s association. The secretary told him that they could give no information to an outsider. Gandhi answered that he was no outsider. Gandhiji demanded 50% of it, but the landlords offered only 25%. Gandhiji agreed to it. He had won a moral victory.

By a long term agreement, the sharecroppers were compelled to plant 15% of their holdings with indigo and surrender the entire indigo produced to the landlords as rent. Harvesting indigo was an irksome business for the peasants.

Gandhi decided to go first to Muzaffarpur because he wanted to gather more information that shukla had been unable to provide. He sent a telegram to Professor J.B.Kripalani whom he had met at Shanti Niketan.

Raj Kumar Shukla shared with Gandhiji the miseries of the people of Champaran. Shukla visted Gandhiji in Lucknow and then in Cawnpore. He was told that Gandhi was scheduled to visit other places in the coming days. Shukla followed him everywhere.

The lesson throws light on the problems faced by sharecroppers and Gandhiji's step to help them come out of the fear. He aimed to improve the social and cultural status of Chanparan.
