Parent Meetings
2 Types:
Teacher Parent Meeting
Hamburger
10 mins - no longer - if they want to talk longer, excuse yourself politely and ask them to set a meeting with you through the office
Individual Meeting
Listen carefully to what they are saying
Don’t take it personally
If you aren’t ready to respond say you have to think and you will get back to them
If the parents are unreasonable or aggressive, tell them you will happily discuss when everyone is calm and ask them to leave. If it escalates, call the police and lock yourself in a classroom
Assessments
Teachers should be doing review with them before they hand out the assignments
Let parents know on WA groups at least 7 days in advance on when the assignments and tests should be done, always provide a scope or notes to study
Primary
Assignments and tests should be scheduled for every 5 weeks. If it is not exact, this is not a problem, however assignments and tests should be spaced out to give the students the best possible chance at success and also not to rush them last minute.
Registered vs non-registered students
Registered uploaded to student platform (don’t mark)
Non-registered - mark & file in POE
Resources
Assignments are open book - allow them to use learner book but don’t show them where to find it
Tests should be done under test circumstances
High School
All HS students are on their own curriculum and pace - this is to be managed on a case by case basis and the HS teacher will be given a handover by the previous teacher

Each student has their own login
There is a Student Master sheet where all the login information is available. If this hasn't been shared with you, please contact management
You teach from the book and use the worksheets that are provided should they be worth it. Sometimes they are a but repetitive so use your discretion when deciding which worksheets to use
The assessments are set out for you -you download them and upload them here.
Everything should be submitted by the end of the year as this is what makes up their marks.
There are lesson plans on there that you are welcome to use, all the work is well paced, but use your own discretion
If any of their accounts are suspended, please contact JMT to help you sort out the problem
There are assignments, tests and progression tests.
Assignments are done on average every 5 weeks for primary and varies for HS. This should be checked per subject and kept track of by the HS teacher
Tests are usually twice per year for primary and varies for HS, but not more than 2 usually.
Progression tests are always two per subject from PS1 to FII - IGCSE and above do external final exams and their exam slots are April/May and Oct/Nov
How to approach high school
HS is a very special place. We have become the center for teens who struggle with some challenges and do not fit into the mainstream system. They do not respond to mainstream rules and regulations so we cannot treat them the way they were treated in the mainstream.
The secret here is to really care about them and to try and remember your own teenage angst and how it feels to feel very alone in a world that has ostracised you or one you don't fit in
This doesn't mean they don't need boundaries - they definitely do
They are old enough to understand what reasonable boundaries are and need to be reminded of them calmly. What they really want is to be treated like adults and we can do that, but when they step out of line they need to be reminded that that's not the way adults should be acting. I found that this is the best approach with them
Also remember that they're just kids in a very scary social media-y world. This is their safe space
GED process
GED is for students who want to go to trade schools
GED does not give uni exemption but there is a way to get to uni, you will just take an extra couple of years
You need to complete an N6 certificate first and then use that with GED to apply for uni exemption and then eventually to a specific uni
GED has only 4 subjects
Social studies
History
Geography
Economics
Science
Biology
Physics
General Scientific Principles
Maths
A lot like Math Literacy in the CAPS curriculum
Language Arts
You have to obtain 145/200 marks to pass - this is roughly 72.5%
All tests are computerised
They are done every Tuesday and Thursday at Boston College in George
You have to be 17 to write the exams
We can arrange the tests or the parents can
It is worth it to do the mock exams at least 2 weeks prior to the actual exams - this will show you what you still need to work on to get a passing grade
There are many online platforms for GED, but we have found the books and My Online School to be the most effective to teach from
Getting concessions
It is possible to get concessions for every diagnosed learner.
Concessions could be time, a separate room or a reader & scribe
Each student is evaluated and given concessions relevant to them
Concessions are not guaranteed

The portfolio should have the following in the following order:
