Program Overview

Training and Research Phase

Objectives:

Credits:

Total: 120 credits

Minimum per semester: 30 credits

Study credits: At least 16 credits

Elective courses: At least 5 credits from study credits

Maximum research credits: 224

Maximum lecturing credits: 16

Comprehensive Examination:

Two parts:

Theoretical-methodological readiness

Report on scientific progress

Activities:

Complete courses

Individual study

Take exams

Research work under supervision

Lecturing (if applicable)

Participate in research centre disputations

Participate in public defenses

Research and Dissertation Phase

Objectives:

Perform research work

Publish research results

Publication Requirements

Academic publications: scientific journal or book

Scientific journal: peer-reviewed

Scientific book: new scientific results or new approach

Textbook/book chapter: can be accepted if revised and officially distributed

Submit doctoral dissertation

Credits:

Total: 120 research credits

End of Phase:

Eighth active semester

Total credits: 240 (120 per phase)

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Credit points: Minimum 240 (absolutorium)

Pass comprehensive examination

Meet professional and publishing requirements

Foreign language certificates:

Level B2 in one accepted world language (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese)

Level B1 in another foreign language (or equivalent)

English must be one of the two languages

Independent research work

Successful defense of doctoral dissertation

Fulfilment of payment obligations

Regulations and Administration

DI determines admission, curriculum, exams, and certificate requirements

Head of DI may require catch-up courses

Course attendance is obligatory (unless waiver granted)

Partial study abroad may be allowed

Thesis supervisor and Head of DI approval needed for study abroad

Doctoral dissertation deadline: 3 years after comprehensive exam (max 1-year extension possible)

Student status can be suspended

Student status can be terminated under various conditions

Duration:

Training and Research: Max 4 semesters

Research and Dissertation: Max 4 semesters

Total Training: Max 8 semesters

Types:

Full-time (state/grant-funded)
