Brief discussion on Lesson 30
Preface
Among the three sages, the lower sect is the cultivation of human and heaven.
The difference between the cultivation of human and heaven vehicles and the pursuit of real life is that it focuses on pursuing a leisurely and fulfilling human body in the next life, and happiness in this world is only incidental.
The content of Shidao is mainly divided into four points:
The first is thinking about the impermanence of death, which mainly deals with the mentality of pursuing happiness in this world.
The second is to think about the suffering of the three evil realms and realize that once you create bad karma, your future life will fall into the evil realms.
The third is to take refuge in the Three Jewels. Only the Three Jewels are the most reliable reliance in this world.
The fourth is to firmly believe in the consequences of karma, which is the law of life activities. I firmly believe in the rule of "such is the cause and so is the effect", and based on being responsible and caring for oneself, one will naturally not do bad things.
The content of the Lower Shido is the basis of the Middle Shido and the Upper Shido, and is also called the Common Lower Shido.
To generate renunciation, we need to think about the impermanence of death and the suffering of the three evil realms as the basis of the lower spiritual path.
Only with a deep understanding of impermanence and the suffering of the lower realms can we initiate true and unfalsified bodhicitta.
Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is not only a spiritual practice, but also runs through the entire Buddhist practice.
Summarize
Although these four contents of Shidao may seem simple, their connotations are very profound. They are the most basic essentials of Buddhism. A thorough understanding will lay a very solid foundation for practice.
1. The shortcomings of not thinking about death
Introduction: People in the world are most afraid of talking about "death", but from a spiritual perspective, we must face the reality of death before we can become sober. Or, people often live in their own emotions and thoughts.
①, "With the heart of living in this world for a long time." The illusion of immortality leads to the heart of living in this world for a long time, taking survival and living a good life as the purpose of life, and only seeking happiness in this world.
②. Treat learning Buddhism as an embellishment of life. Good deeds are mixed with greed, anger and ignorance, egotism and fame and gain, as well as the causes of the three evil paths. In the end, it is egotism and ordinary people's mind that achieves success.
③ Spend a lot of time on trivial matters and desires, waste your life on meaningless things, procrastinate, slack off, and fail to study Buddhism diligently.
④. Taking survival in this world as the purpose and hoping for perfection in life. Pursuing perfection in this world constantly causes troubles and breeds greed, anger and ignorance. They will commit all kinds of sins such as killing, stealing, committing adultery, seriously deviating from the Dharma, and eventually leading to the lower realms.
Quoting the "Four Hundred Odes", it is explained that all conditioned dharma in the three realms will eventually be destroyed by the God of Death. If I realize that death is with us all the time, but I am still sleeping peacefully, what problem could be more serious than this?
Quoting "The Theory of Entering the World" explains that we will eventually die and give up everything in reality. If you can't see through the illusion of reality, indulge in it. It is very sad to do all kinds of evil deeds for the sake of immediate temporary benefits.
2. The victory of thinking about death
Introduction: For Buddhists, we must be prepared to die at any time and live every day as if it were the last day. If we can do this, there will be many benefits.
① Understanding the truth of impermanence can stop loving one’s relatives, property, reputation, status, and interpersonal relationships. (Loving will bring pain and trouble)
② Recognizing impermanence can also reduce greed and be willing to give money to others. Only when you give up your attachment to everything in the world and see through it and let it go can you truly be free and happy.
③ Recognizing the principle of impermanence, you will find that all efforts and struggles in the world are illusory, and you will stop evil deeds, and at the same time accumulate good deeds such as taking refuge and observing the precepts. If you plant good causes, you will be able to experience extraordinary rewards in the future. At the same time, you will also have the ability to attract all sentient beings and guide them towards liberation.
④The thoughts of impermanence and death can eliminate greed, ignorance, and self-arrogance in the three realms. If the true thoughts of impermanence can arise, greed will be disintegrated and the mind will be purified.
⑤The thought of impermanence can immediately destroy troubles and evil karma, and achieve the door to all goodness. Recognize impermanence and be responsible for your future life, and quickly cultivate good deeds, otherwise you may fall into the lower realms.
⑥Since beginningless time, we have been addicted to reincarnation and cannot be liberated. Only now that we have gained a free human body can we have the opportunity to practice. We should always think about the value contained in our current identity and develop a desire to cultivate the Tao diligently.
Master Tsong reminds: Don’t underestimate the impermanence of mindfulness of death. If you don't think about the impermanence of death, you can't get out of the ordinary mind, and no matter how high you practice, it won't respond. The first misconception is that only those who have no other profound methods to practice can practice impermanence; the second misconception is that impermanence does not need to be a long-term practice method.
At the beginning, you can enter the path by cultivating the mind of impermanence; in the middle, you can cultivate the impermanence and activate your efforts; in the later period, you can cultivate the impermanence and realize Nirvana, which is the path of perfect liberation or the path of Bodhisattva.
The mind that clings to the immortal is the door to all decay, and the mind to the deceased is the door to all perfection.
Correct the common belief of immortality and face the reality of death
